With its rugged, violent history and otherworldly landscape, Gallup has ignited the imaginations of an array of famous Americans from John Wayne to Bob Dylan. Tony Hillerman’s novels put Navajo culture, and by extension Gallup, on the map. For the Navajo people for whom the region has been home for millennia, the town and its alcohol-fueled economy have a more sinister pull.

As an outsider who became an insider, Bob Rosebrough shares Gallup’s iconic stories–and reveals its long-hidden secrets.

Book Talk – Send a Runner: A Navajo Honors the Long Walk

The Navajo tribe, the Diné, is the largest tribe in the United States and lives across the American Southwest. Over a century ago, they were nearly wiped out by the Long Walk, forced removal of most of the Diné people to a military-controlled reservation in New Mexico.

The summer of 2018 marked the 150th anniversary of the Navajos’ return to their homelands. One Navajo family and their community decided to honor that return by organizing a ceremonial run from Spider Rock in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, to Santa Fé, New Mexico, in order to deliver a message and to honor the survivors of the Long Walk.

Eskeets ran 330 miles from Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, to Santa Fé, New Mexico, in sixteen days. His support team on the road includes Jim Kristofic, who observes the journey and records it in his notebook. Send a Runner: A Navajo Honors the Long Walk is a story of running for family, history, and the future of the Diné.

Storytelling & the Art of Jewelry Making

Her work has been included in international and national publications and exhibited throughout the United States. Wilson has taught fine art courses and
served as an advisor for the Art Student Collective at the University of New Mexico for 8 years.

Currently, she teaches Jewelry and Small Metals Construction, Drawing, and Introduction to Art History as a Visiting Assistant Professor.

Bob Rosebrough

Mr. Rosebrough has practiced law in New Mexico for 30 years. His primary areas of practice are employment law, business law and estate planning. He has developed a liability reduction program named Legal Safety 1st that helps business owners prevent employment related lawsuits and claims through a menu of customized kits and packages.

Raised in Farmington, New Mexico, Bob graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1975 (B.U.S. in Political Science and Economics) and in 1978 (J.D. – Dean’s List and Honor Roll). Bob has an extensive record of public service. He recently completed terms as Mayor of Gallup and as a member of the New Mexico First board of directors. As Mayor, Bob helped negotiate a consent decree for the City of Gallup with the U.S. Department of Justice for employment practices of the City that preceded his term in office.

Bob is an author and avid outdoorsman. He has written a mountaineering guide to the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado and co-authored a hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing guide to the Gallup area. Tony Hillerman included Bob, by name, as a character in his best-selling novel, The Fallen Man after he helped Hillerman with the rock climbing portions of the plot. Bob is married and has four children.

Sunburnt Stone

Sunburnt Stone hails from Albuquerque, New Mexico. We play music based upon a mix of various influences and genres from country, blues, rock, and Americana. Our sound comes from our individual unique talents and experiences. We share our inspirations from our experiences living the reservation life to the pavement of Burque. We bring to you our experiences in life through our music; sunset skies and the pains of broken glass weathering through the souls of each and every one.

Jesica Adeky

My name is Jesica Adeky, I am 34 years old and live south of Gallup, NM in a small community called Breadsprings. It is a lovely place that sometimes cannot make up its mind on what the weather should be like. I have always enjoyed crafts, drawing in particular because it gives me a type of freedom to express my thoughts or just to be as random as I want to be. I like to think of myself as a beginner artist who likes to show others what drawings I have completed so far. I like talking about different subjects, but I love being asked questions. So far I have challenged myself to make drawings that change as I continue to work on them, I usually do not have a set object in mind when I draw.

Random Drawings/Telling Stories

Using shapes and lines to depict different objects or animals while telling a small story. Drawings are not planned. This is to show the audience the power of visuals using simple drawings as a medium. Stories may come before or after a drawing is done. Audience interaction encouraged and suggestions may be accepted if time allowed.

Materials used: Markers in various colors, pencils, colored pens, highlighters in various colors, archival Ink pens for details, and various sizes of paper.
