Works Progress Administration (WPA) Art

The WPA Federal Arts Project was established during the Depression in the 1930s by the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The WPA started visual arts programs to aid unemployed artists. Some 100 art centers were operating throughout the United States. The Gallup Arts Center was one of four in New Mexico.

The Gallup Arts Center was located in the courthouse which is now the site of the present-day Gallup City Hall. When the courthouse building was razed, the WPA Art was divided between the City of Gallup and McKinley County. The City of Gallup turned over the WPA art to the new public library in 1952. This is one of the largest WPA Art collection in New Mexico. Various works are hung throughout the library such as paintings, drawings, furniture, mosaics, and more. They are included in our online catalog under the name of the artist and artwork.
