Japanese-style drumming highlights culture, discipline and creative expression

GALLUP – The downtown walkway filled with the sounds of drumming as the BK Taiko Japanese Drumming group face demonstrations and taught locals the art of the great drum.

Octavia Fellin Public Library Experiential Learning Coordinator, Joshua Whitman, has been working with the group for a number of months to bring them to Gallup for a hands-on demonstration.

A diversity festival

“Back in July, I wanted to do a diversity festival … I came across their website and thought it was something different and interesting,” he said.

Whitman said the group’s unique talents were perfect for helping spread greater cultural awareness to different ethnic groups in the area.

Halloween Trivia Night

Sugar Skull Decorating Party

Cursive & Calligraphy Writing Intensive

Kids with little to no knowledge of cursive writing because of the lack of teaching in the public school system will be able to stop by the Children’s Branch on Tuesday, October 22nd at 4:00 p.m. to learn how to write in cursive as well as calligraphy techniques.

Navajo Rug Weaving Class

Diné weaver Lois A. Becenti will host a FREE Navajo Rug Weaving Class on the third Friday of every month beginning October 18th at the Main Library from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Ms. Becenti is a lifetime weaver from Coyote Canyon who learned about weaving from her mother as a child. Her interest and inspiration in weaving peaked after taking weaving classes at Ft. Wingate Boarding School.

Learn the fundamentals and techniques of rug weaving in the traditional Navajo style. Methods for improving weaving techniques as well as different rug designs and tools used will be discussed. Beginning and advanced weavers are welcome.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day Crafts

Celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day at the Main Library on Monday, October 14th by creating a beautiful dreamcatcher and other crafts. Dreamcatcher workshops will be at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in the Main Library. other indigenous crafts will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Taiko (Japanese Drummers)

OFPL and Bushido Kenkyukai proudly presents Taiko, a traditional Japanese musical art, taught through lecture and demonstration individuals learn about Taiko history, terminology, and Japanese culture and etiquette.
